San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz Inaugural Race

Finish Strong Tommy Sustala competed along side 1,800 athletes in the San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz race on Saturday, August 29. Tommy finished this treacherous 1.2 mile swim, agonizingly hilly 25 mile bike, and scenic 7 mile run event in just 2:48:38. Tommy finished 4th of the 111 athletes in his 40-44 age group and 26th overall. He had a 30:38 swim, 1:17:19 bike, and 56:01 run.

You get a better sense for how difficult this race must be when reading the course description.
"Swimming from Alcatraz Island was once thought to be impossible. This year, 1,800 athletes make the treacherous swim, fighting the strong currents and ever looming fear of what lies below the water's surface. This is certainly not a race for the faint of heart. The swim will start your journey but the hills of San Francisco may just be the hardest section on the course. You will find sharp turns, fast descents and agonizing climbs to test your aerobic endurance and mental fortitude.

Next you get to take in the scenic views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge as you weave your way back to the finish line. The shadows of Alcatraz Island loom as a reminder of your epic race. Throw in a beach run with a 400 step sand ladder and you have one of the most difficult triathlons in the world. Come prepared both physically and mentally to challenge yourself as this will be a race you will never forget!"

Congrats to Tommy for conquering this race!

On August 28, Team FSR athletes Scott Peterson, Carolyn Barron, Michael Collins, Steve Hardy, Will Blackbird, and Chris Normyle raced the Olympic distance Clear Lake International Triathlon with distances of 1500 meter swim, 24.9 mile bike, and 6.2 mile run.

Team FSR Scott Peterson was 1st in his 25-29 AG and 6th overall. Scott's splits were swim 27:39, bike 1:07:10 and amazingly fast run of 38:38 (6:14 per mile pace).

Scott reports, "The salt water swim felt pretty good and smooth throughout. I started out in front and stayed up front. I finished 3rd in my age group on the swim. On the bike, I had a tailwind for first stretch (about 10 miles) and felt great. However, the headwind during the last stretch of 10 miles made it tough both physically and mentally. I finished 4th in my age group on the bike. This was my best run of the summer! I finished 1st in my age group and was just 4 tenths away from posting the fastest run time among the age groupers."

Carolyn Barron came in 8th in her 40-44 age group with an overall time of 2:56:55. Carolyn's splits were 35:13 swim (fifth fastest in her AG), 1:19:44 bike (18.8 mph pace), and 1:00:10 run (9:42 per mile pace).

Michael Collins came in 4th in his 35-39 AG and 11th overall with an overall time of 2:18:42. His splits were 32:44 swim, 1:01:44 bike (24.3 mph - and 2nd fastest in his AG), and 41:52 run (6:45 per mile pace).

Steve Hardy came in 8th in his 45-49 AG with an overall time of 2:31:54. His splits were 31:48 swim, 1:06:18 bike (22.6 mph pace), and 51:26 run (8:18 per mile pace).

Will Blackbird came in 2nd in his 45-49 AG with an overall time of 2:29:52. His splits were 30:32 swim, 1:06 (22.7 mph pace), and 51:04 run (8:14 per mile pace).
Outstanding!

Finish Strong Racer Hannah Barron took on the Tri Girl sprint triathlon on August 15 with much success. Hannah won her age group and was 26 out of 353 finishers. Not bad for a 13 year old! Hannah ran the last leg under hot and humid conditions in 26:49 (8:54 per mile pace). Hannah placed first beating the 14 year old behind her by 7 minutes and 13 seconds!! Her total time was 1:09:51.

Ironman Texas Course Description

The last I heard, 1,508 Texans are signed up for Ironman Texas with over 100 from The Woodlands! As predicted, the race sold out in a matter of weeks.

There has been much speculation about the course. Here is what I have gathered from various discussions with people who are in the know.

The swim will be in Lake Woodlands starting at Northshore Park and ending at Town Green Park. The point to point swim will take athletes down the west side of the lake and then back up the easy side before entering the Waterway.

There will be a short, fairly steep uphill run leading from the swim exit to the transition in Town Green Park (located between the library and the Cynthia Woods Pavilion). The transition is close to the center of The Woodlands shopping and dining area so plenty to do for friends and family.

The bike route will head west out of The Woodlands via Lake Woodlands or Woodlands Parkway (both are 4 to 6 lane roads with shoulders) before heading north on FM2978. FM 2978 is a 4 lanes road with wide shoulders until crossing FM1488 where is becomes a lightly traveled 2 lane road with a smaller (3 feet) shoulder. The road turns into Fish Creek Thoroughfare. Riders will turn left and head west on FM2854, a moderately busy two lane road, before crossing a major 4 lane road (SH105) and continuing around the north side of the town of Montgomery (the loop is called Lone Star Parkway) before turning right right and heading north on FM149. At this point, cyclists will encounter a steady diet of rolling hills until reaching Bethel Rd/FM1791 where they turn right and then left onto Tailaferro. Tailaferro turns into County Road 209. Riders will turn right onto Bays Chapel and head north for a few miles before making a u-turn and coming back down south to FM149 and then continuing the ride to Richards on FM149. All roads up to this point are in excellent condition and local cyclists use them on a regular basis (with the exception of Tailaferro and Bays Chapel). FM149 is also shaded for most of it's length as it goes through the Sam Houston National Forest. Bethel Road, Tailaferro, CO Road 209 and Bays Chapel are also shaded.

Upon reaching the small hamlet of Richards, riders will turn south on FM1486, another lightly traveled rolling road with a tar and chip surface. The route will cross SH105 again at Dobbin and then turn south on Jackson Road a few miles south of SH105. After several miles, Jackson Road merges with FM149 which riders stay on until they hit FM1488. From here, the route will most likely turn left onto FM1488 and then make a quick right onto Spur 149 Road. Less than a mile later, a left hand turn will take riders onto Dobbin Hufsmith Road (locally called the "Dog Loop" by cyclists and triathletes for reasons that no longer apply). This is a narrow road with no shoulders but in good condition and is fairly lightly traveled. Dobbin Hufsmith intersects at FM2978 where riders will turn left and head back up to Woodlands Parkway where they will enter The Woodlands and head for T2.

The run will consist of 3 loops taking in a good portion of the Waterway and looping around Lake Woodlands. The run will traverse both sides of the Waterway and afford spectators ample locations for catching the action. Personally, I would book an outside table along the Waterway at the Goose's Acre where you can get great food and plenty of drink. The run will proceed counterclockwise around Lake Woodlands via Grogans Mill, Lake Woodlands Dr., E. Panther Creek and Woodlands Parkway before entering the upscale neighborhood of East Shore for a lakeside tour of it's large houses and townhomes. The back onto the Waterway for an out and back before heading around the lake again. The run course will be very flat and shaded in many areas. It will be on wide pathways and some roads.

The finish is slated to be in Market Street, The Woodlands premier shopping, dining and entertainment venue. For those lucky enough to book a room at the swank Avia Hotel, you will be literally steps away from the finish line. Market Street is also directly across the street from the transition area.

This is a spectator friendly course. The swim start will be visible from Northshore Park and the Lake Woodlands bridge. Mobile spectators can quickly bike to the south side of the lake to see the turn before heading over to the Waterway where the last 800 to 1200m will be in a canal that has sidewalks on either side. Spectators that want to get out to the bike course can but there will be limited parking and viewing areas. The run course will be great for viewing as stated. Great spots all along the Waterway and it's a short walk over to East Shore if you want to get away from the crowds.

I will get some pictures of the course and start posting them on this site.

For out of towners, please feel free to contact me and I would be glad to answer any questions you may have about the course or local area. Our weekend rides and runs take in most of the Ironman course.

Boston Marathon

The prestigious Boston Marathon was held on April 19. Finish Strong Kristin Collins and Ed York were among the thousands of participants who finished this famous 26.2 mile course. Kristin finished in 3:49 -- her second fastest marathon ever. Ed finished in 3:39.

Kristin recaps her race...

"The 114th Boston Marathon was my second Boston and it proved, again, to be a world class race and fabulous experience. Although it was rainy on Saturday and Sunday, Marathon Monday was absolutely perfect. Not a cloud in the sky and 42 degrees as we walked from our hotel to the Public Garden where I stood in line with thousands of others waiting to be whisked away 26.2 miles to Hopkinton and the Athlete Village, which was an energizing place to be.

There was excitement and nervousness in the air as runners stood around, sat on cardboard, read the paper, played card games, drank coffee and performed pre-race rituals. Soon, over the loud speaker, announcements were being made for runners to begin the walk towards the starting corrals. I found my corral, shed extra clothing and before long, was crossing the starting line!! My 14th marathon was under way!! Like last year, the road from Hopkinton was lined with spectators, eager to cheer everyone on. I heard "Go Blue!!" numerous times and waved back at people.

Leaving Hopkinton, we ran through Ashland. Little kids held out their hands anxiously awaiting a high five and I complied. Mile five was my first Michael sighting. He took the train out to Framingham. It was great seeing a familiar, friendly face! The Red Sox were down by three in the third inning. Dang. Natick came and went. A group of college kids were barbecuing up on a lawn and it smelled really good!

The Welseley Girls didn't disappoint at mile 12. They were out in full force with their high pitched screams and "kiss me" signs. Up ahead was Newton. Those hills were on my mind once again. Steady going up, work the downhills, I kept telling myself. Each hill I thought was Heartbreak Hill. And then there was another one. Where were all of these things last year?

Okay, focus...back to business...A little while later, I heard my name and I looked to my left, there was Michael again. At mile 20, just like he promised. This time he brought the cowbell. Finally, I made it up Heartbreak Hill as Michael screamed " That effort deserves a little more cowbell!!" It was sort of all downhill from there. The last 6 miles went by in a blur. Still trying to stay focused and keep on a decent pace. Soon after, Boston College was in sight. I ran on the right side of the road so that I could high five all of the people lining the course. They were so loud and inspiring. I really think my pace picked up.

Mile 23, I heard my name and looked over to see Jon Walk taking pictures and waving. Another friendly face! Michael was still running along side of me ( off the course) screaming my name, taking pictures and clanging the cowbell. 3 more miles to go!!! I can do anything for 3 miles!! Mile 24 came and went. Then the Citgo sign appeared on the horizon. Mile 25! I looked to my right just in time to catch a glimpse of Fenway Park. The streets were full of spectators and it was difficult to run in places because there were so many of them but it made the experience even better. Next thing I knew, the course took a hard right turn- Hereford Street. Already? Yep! One more turn onto Boylston and the Finish Line.

Boylston was crowded with spectators and like last year, it sounded like a stadium full of cheering fans. They must have been 8-10 deep along some parts of the sidewalk. I wanted to just stop and take it all in, but I was on the clock! Crossing the finish line was both a happy and sad moment. Happy that I had just completed another marathon and sad that my Boston experience was over. It took me several minutes to remember to look at my watch. 3:49:24 was my finish time!! After getting The Medal, a bottle of water and a snack bag, I made my way to the clothing buses and then found Michael. Although my quads by now were on fire, I ran/hobbled to him and gave him a big hug and wished him Happy Birthday. It wasn't until we were home that I realized that this was my second fastest marathon!!"

Ironman Australia

Sean Craig represented Finish Strong well at Ironman Australia held in March. Sean was thrilled to reach his goal! Sean kept a nice comfortable pace from start to finish in the swim. His swim was so wonderful that he almost felt like he was holding back. When he transitioned from the swim, he was disappointed to find that someone stole his towel and powerbar out of his bike bag. But he got over that and headed off on the bike. Sean found the bike more difficult than he expected. Starting off with six miles of hills, he flatted at mile five. He kept going and was really feeling the effects of increased wind and hills at the turn around point. But he got through it and went on to the run. He felt pretty good on the run, but did have some cramping at times.

Sean told me, "The key to finishing the race was the hydration and nutrition plan that you created, without it there was no way I would be able to deal with the heat and the full day's worth of activity." Sean went on to pass many people on the run, including a 15 x Ironman. Congrats, Sean!!

Nike Women’s Marathon 2009: Return of the Cowbell

By Kristin Collins

In late March, our bank account was charged for one entry to the Nike Women’s Marathon. I had submitted my name in the lottery and got in! This would make my 12th marathon and 4th NWM race. The next six and a half months were spent in preparation for the hills of San Francisco! We arrived in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, stopped briefly at the race expo and then headed to Niketown where four floors of merchandise awaited me. Ahhh…I was in heaven!!!

20,000 people, mostly women, lined up at race start on Sunday, October 18th. More than 15, 000 of them registered for the half marathon with just under 5,000 running/walking in the full. Temperatures at race start were in the low 50’s- perfect conditions for a race! Michael stayed with me near my starting corral offering Gu, Power Bar Gel Blasts, granola bars, water, a little cowbell, and words of encouragement. After a brief meltdown and the usual “what was I thinking??”, I started to get really nervous!! The gun went off at 7:00 and we headed through downtown to the water front and the Embarcadero. Running past the piers and tourist areas, I settled into my pace.

The first small hill greeted runners at the 3 mile mark followed by the uphill entrance to Fort Mason at mile 4. I remembered this area from last year and the hills were still tough! The sound of cowbells took my mind off the hills: Michael had to be around here somewhere. Sure enough, to my left, a bicycle- riding Michael came zooming down the road yelling my name and clanking the cowbell. He was able to stay near me for the majority of the race, ringing that stupid cowbell. I started to welcome the silence of running alone and then the cowbell would ring again.

Next up was the incline from mile 6-10. There was a 295’ elevation gain from mile 6.2-7.2 . Straight back down to under 150’ at mile 8 and then back up to 295’ at mile 9.6. After that, we headed downhill towards the water, passing The Cliffhouse. Clank-Clank goes the cowbell. Taking a left hand turn into Golden Gate Park, miles 11-15 were uphill again…and then back down. More cowbell. After leaving Golden Gate Park at mile 16, we took a left onto the Great Highway and headed towards the SF Zoo. The open road meant easier spectator/bicycle access and lots more cowbell. We then made a left on Skyline Drive and headed out for the loop around the lake. Lake Merced was on my right and we had to run around the entire lake before coming back to the Great Highway. This is always the toughest part of the course for me because the hill running starts to take a toll on my legs and I start to get really tired of the cowbell!

I had to constantly check my Garmin to make sure my pace wasn’t slipping. I felt like I had a fast leg turnover, but the Garmin didn’t lie- I needed to pick it up!! I started making short term goals for myself- run to the next red light and see how the pace is. Okay, done. Now, run to the street light waaaaayyyy up there. Okay, done. Up next: The Ghiardelli Chocolate Mile- YAY! Usually chocolate sounds good, but for I was tired of the sweet flavors of Gu and Gatorade. My thoughts were to get the chocolate and hand it to Michael so he could enjoy it. After missing the first two volunteers handing out the chocolate bars, there was one last hope- as I grabbed the chocolate out of the hand of the last volunteer, he pulled his hand away before I had a decent grip and I dropped the chocolate bar. Nooooooo!!!! I couldn’t stop to pick it up because it would be too difficult to start running again. Clank-Clank goes the cowbell again.

The wind picked up as I made the final left turn onto The Great Highway. Nothing like running uphill into a head wind with dead legs!! One more uphill to mile 24 and then literally, the last 2.2 miles were all downhill. My legs hurt, my quads really hurt, my calves were cramping up and I was ready to stop running. Two more miles. Michael had gone ahead to the finish line so I was alone. Hang in there. You got this. Don’t stop now. I started to miss the cowbell.

Looking to my right, across the road, a steady stream of runners were still heading out to Lake Merced. What a relief to be heading to the finish line. I started focusing on people in front of me to pass and picked them off one by one. The roads started to become more populated with spectators and I drew strength from their encouraging words - “You’ve got this!” “Stay Strong!”, “ Keep Running!” “Way to Go, 4804!”. The crowds became more dense and then suddenly, up ahead was the Finish Line Banner. YESSSSSS!!! Looking at the finish clock, it became reality that I was going to fall short of my marathon goal. I finished in 3:56:14- my fourth sub-four marathon in a row, which for me, is still exciting. Next, I was handed a blue Tiffany’s box by a good looking Fireman wearing a black tuxedo. What a great way to end a race!! Michael and the cowbell were there to give me a big hug at the finish line.

Time for a little recovery and back to training. Up next: The Houston Marathon!!

IronKids Nationals

By Carolyn Barron

IronKids Nationals were held in Tucson (Oro Valley), Arizona on Sunday, October 4, 2009. Hannah and Lane both qualified for the race last month in Alpharetta, GA. Sunday morning was beautiful- cool and sunny- a perfect day for racing. The distance for the intermediate age group was a 150 meter pool swim, a 4 mile bike and a 1 mile run.

Hannah, 11, had a great race! She swam well, made up lots of time on her bike leg (4/17) in her age group and finished up with a strong run of 7:23 which placed her in 5th.

Lane, 10, also had a solid swim, rode hard on the bike (ranking 1/19) in his age group and even though he did not have his best run he was able to also place 5th which was a podium finish!

Overall, they both had good races and did well competing against some of the fastest youth triathletes in the country.

Meat Pie Tri

By Deb Lyons

MEAT PIE TRI you say? Here's the history.

You probably can't spell or pronounce it, but might remember Natchitoches (NACK-uh-tush) from Steel Magnolias or when Oprah Winfrey declared it the Best Little Town in the Whole USA! Louisianians knew about this quaint historic town long before the stars arrived. Since the 1700's it's been home to the famous Natchitoches Meat Pie, when street vendors chanted Hotta meat pies!
This year former Ironman Champ, Peter Reid, was on hand to encourage the participants. Among them were Dana Lyons and Kent Morris. Both enjoyed themselves and even sampled the famous meat pies offered post-race. Meat Pie Tri began at 7am on Sunday, September 27 with a very spectator friendly 1/2 mile swim in Cane River Lake. Then out of T1 up a short steep incline onto Front Street for a 20 mile out and back ride over some light rolling terrain. Participants racked their bikes and headed out of T2 up the steps of the Riverbank for a 5K under the beautiful canopy of oaks along the lake.

Dana finished the race in 1:24:27 placing 3rd overall and top masters. Dana had the fourth strongest bike at 50:22 for the 20mile leg. His run was the sixth fastest overall at 19:34 for the 5K run. Kent finished 3rd in his age group with a time of 1:35:19. In his age group, Kent had the third fastest at 15:21 for the 1/2 mile distance, the second fastest bike at 54:33, and the third fastest run at 22:30. Way to go!

USAT Halfmax Redman Triathlon Championship

The USAT Halfmax Redman Triathlon Championships was held September 19 in Oklahoma City. The event was a half Ironman distance with 1.2 mile swim/56 mile bike/13.1 mile run.

The race was delayed due to rain. Competitors had to dismount their bikes during the bike leg and wade through 14 inches of rain. Still 574 competitors managed to finish the race - 152 female and 422 male.

Finish Strong coached athletes had a good showing. Tommy Sustala and Mike Bard both posted PRs at this race.

Tommy Sustala, 49, came in 10th in his age group of 75 competitors, 45th of all 421 males. Tommy swam the 1.2 mile swim in 26:49, biked 56 miles in 2:31:54 and ran a fast half marathon in 1:44:11 for an overall time of 4:48:05.

Kyle Mays, 46, finished the half ironman championship race in 5:06:16. Kyle came in 20th out of 50 competitors in his age group and 127 out of 422 males. Kyle completed the swim in 32:55, the bike in 2:40:55 and the final half marathon in 1:47:54.

Mike Bard came in 5:15:13 setting a PR and placing 3rd in the Clydesdale division. Mike swam a solid 29:41 swim, completed the bike leg in 2:37:53 and final half marathon in 2:04:17.

Grand Prairie Half Iron Man

By Tom Schwartzkopf

Everyone loves good pictures of a tough race. This is the Prairie Man Half Iron race at Joe Poole Lake in Grand Prairie Texas. This was my toughest race this year in both distance and overcoming adversity. The word of the day today was "adapt". It rained all day and night before the race. The rain never let up during the day but that made for cool temperatures.

Here I am coming in after completing the 1.2 mile swim. The waves were tough to overcome and made navigation difficult. My plan was to relax and enjoy the swim. I did have fun but the waves, wind and current conditions made the swim difficult. A few swimmers were brought in by boat due to the tough conditions.

Look at the fat guy. I missed the swim exit by a few yards and had to run back to the water exit point. It was another lonely exit for me as few people wanted to stay out in the rain waiting for everyone to come in.

I can't help but look back and see how I fared with my competition. I did well on the swim and came out of the water in first place.

Here I am exiting the transition area prior to the bike ride. As you can see, the rain is coming down pretty hard. The roads were slick and slowed everyone down. The bike course was shortened from 56 miles to 42 miles. I did have a setback on the bike by falling down on the course. I'm ok but my bike is still in the shop.

This is me in the center of the photo at mile 2 on the run. The rain made it nice and cool for a long run.

The only real draw-back to all this rain is running in wet shoes.

I finished the 13.1 mile run averaging 9:41 per mile. Not my best but I was able to keep the pace for the entire run. My goals for the race were to finish without stopping to rest and to validate a nutrition plan.

Another long race under my belt. I was feeling good but also tired. My final time was 4:51:49. This is my last race before heading to Arizona in November. Ironman Arizona is twice as long as this race and is truly an endurance event. As always, my goals are to finish the race without stopping and having fun. For me, these are personal challenges but I also enjoy the friendly competition I have with the many friends I have in this sport. I will keep you posted on my progress. Ironman Arizona will take place on November 22nd.

PrairieMan Half Ironman

Two Finish Strong Athletes Tom Schwarzkopf and Michael Lechtenberg finished a grueling Half Ironman in Grand Prairie, TX on September 13.

According to Tom, the weather was nasty with constant rain, cold temperatures, flooded roads. The surf was so high and the wind so fierce that several swimmers had to be rescued. The slick roads led to treacherous conditions for the bike. Blown down course signs on the final run lead many to run extra mileage.

Despite these brutal conditions, Tom and Mike managed to finish the race. Tom in 4:51:49 and and Mike in 4:57:45.

Tom's final analysis,"Overall, I'm happy that I finished the entire race without stopping…or quitting."

IronKids Alpharetta Race

Submitted by Carolyn BarronHannah and Lane Barron competed in the IronKids Alpharetta (Atlanta, GA) race on Sunday, September 13. This was the largest kids’ race we’ve ever seen much less participated in. Almost 900 kids ages 6-15 were registered.

Hannah competed in the 11-year old female category which had a total of 38 girls. She had a solid 150 meter swim, a super 4 mile bike on a course with some long hills (2nd fastest bike split in her age group) and a good run (3rd fastest run) to claim the 2nd place in her age group!

Lane also raced well in the 10 year old male category and completed his swim easily, rode hard on the bike (fastest bike split of all 66 ten-year old males) and finished strong with the fastest run split of all his 10-year old male competitors as well! He placed 1st in his age group.

This race qualified both to race at IronKids nationals in Tucson, Arizona in October. Watch out …here we come!

Austin Triathlon

Kudos to Finish Strong coached athletes Jim Harrington and Richard Lewellen who competed in the Austin Triathlon on Labor Day, September 7.

Jim Harrington, 45, competed in the Olympic distance 1500 meter swim/40K bike/10K run event. He placed 6th in his mammoth age group 62 deep of (45 to 49 year olds) and 69th overall in a field of nearly 650 age groupers. Jim had a particularly strong bike leg covering the 40K distance in just over 1:05.

Richard Lewellen, 65, competed in the Sprint distance 700 meter swim/27k bike/5K run event.
He placed 5th in his age group of die-hard 60 to 64 year olds. Richard had an excellent swim of just over 17:37 for the 700 meter.

Way to go!

Kiwanis Kid's Tri

Hannah and Lane Barron continue their preparation for the USAT Jr National Championships with another winning performance at the Kiwanis Kids Triathlon.

The race was a 100 yard swim, 2 mile bike and a 1/2 mile run. Hannah was 3rd out of the water with a great swim and a blistering T1 to put her in 2nd place heading out onto the bike course. She raced aggressively on the bike and had a solid run to finish in 14:08 and claim 2nd overall in the girls 7-12 age group. She also beat all of the 7-12 year old boys (except her younger brother).

Lane was 2nd out of the water with a strong swim and also had a super fast T1 that allowed him to be first heading out onto the bike course. He never looked back lengthening his lead on both the bike and run to finish in 13:33, first overall and approximately 40 seconds up on the next male competitor.

Play Tri Sprint Tri

The Play Tri Sprint was this years USAT South Mid West Regional Championship race and as such I expected a deeper field. The Dallas race attracted 272 participants over the 4th of July weekend.

I have to tell you that the location is great especially for those that bring the family along. The Marriott at Las Colinas is very nice and the $79 per night room can't be beat. We had a great view of the community fire works from our balcony. The swim and transition are at the hotel so everything is very convenient.

On Saturday the temperature was near 100 degrees but race morning brought rain and temperatures in the high 70's. The 500m swim was definitely long, maybe as much as 100m based on times. The bike course was rolling but too technical at all but was made somewhat treacherous due to the wet roads. The out and back run is flat and fast. No shade along the run course but it was not needed on race day.

Four Finish Strong triathletes participate in the race with Finish Strong associate coach Richard Mac Namee placing 3rd overall and taking the Masters crown. Richard used a blazing, race best swim (7:37) to get a good jump on everyone. Richard finished only 1:10 behind the overall winner.

I overcame a lousy swim to place 9th overall and win the 50-54 age group. I had the 3rd fastest bike and 5th fastest run but gave up over 3 1/2 minutes on the swim to Richard. I must have been day dreaming. Actually I think it was all of the long course training I have been doing.

Ed York placed 17th overall and 2nd in his age group (45-49). Ed was solid in all three disciplines clocking some of the best times in his age group.

David Holsey continues to improve with every race he does. David placed 2nd in the 60-64 age group with the fastest run.

Buffalo Springs 70.3

Lubbock usually offers up some very hot weather and wind which attracts those preparing for Kona. But the day brought rain, cool weather and high winds. It was a tough day with several people being pulled from the swim due to choppy conditions.

Four Finish Strong athletes made the trip this year. Tim Monk was one who wanted the hot temperatures and winds as he is preparing for his first trip to Kona. Tim had a solid race posting a time of 4:45:13 which was good enough to place him 64th overall. Tim is an excellent swimmer and it certainly helped in the conditions. He swam 29:31.

Patrick Sexton just started running again a couple of months ago after recovering from a calf injury. He was till able to post a respectable time of 5:35. Jim Harrington (5:38:11) and Mike Bard (5:38:16) had solid races with Mike placing 2nd in the under 39 Clydesdale Division.

Y Freedom Tri

This is nice pool swim tri that is great for those looking to do their first tri or just looking for a tri that the whole family can do.

The trip to Katy was worth for Kent Morris & his daughter Brittany as both had great races. This was Brittany's first tri and she ended up winning the female 14 & under age group and placed an awesome 140th overall (there were about 400 in the race). I believe Brit is being coached by dad. Kent placed 3rd in the 45-49 AG and 25th overall.

Kyle Mays placed 2nd the 45-49 AG (with the help of the fastest bike split in the AG) and 13 overall.

Cap Tex and Combat Triathlons

It was a busy weekend for Finish Strong athletes with multiple races taking place. In addition to my race up in Arkansas (see story below), others raced at Cap Tex (Olympic and Sprint distance race in Austin) and Combat Sprint (a pool swim sprint tri in Texas City).

Casey Clark and Jim Harrington raced the Olympic in Austin. Casey had the 67th fastest run (out of 1327 competitors) on his way to a 2:23:42 finishing time. Jim had a solid bike (142nd out of 1327) to clock a 2:26:40.

In the Sprint race, Lisa Tilton-McCarthy won her age group with the help of a blistering 21:59 5k which was the 29th fastest run (males included)!

At the Combat Sprint tri, Hannah Barron won the girls 14 and under title and her sister, Katherine placed 3rd. Lane Barron finish 3rd in the boys 14 and under. Lane, who is 10 years old, was 140th overall out of 275 competitors. Carolyn Barron (mom) had to work hard to say ahead of Hannah. Carolyn continues ti improve with each race.

Kent Morris was 5th in his AG (45-49) and 42nd overall while David Holsey was 4th in the 60-64 AG and 91st overall.

For those contemplating their first tri, the Combat Sprint with it's time-trial-start pool swim is an excellent race.

Du for the Parks

It was a much longer drive up to Hot Springs, Arkansas than what I had expected but with the whole family along for the trip the time I didn't mind too much. This was our first time to Hot Springs and we wish we could have spent more time there. Scenic with lots of things to do if you liked being outside.

We made the trip so I could race the Du for the Parks which was the Arkansas State Championship race this year. The race course (2 mile run/12 mile bike/2 miles run) is rather scenic but it was raining and the course was slick. The goal for the day was to stay up right!

There was a lot of good competition on the start line and the first run started very fast. I was about 6th off the run in 11:34. Jim Griffis, also from The Woodlands, ad a good first run but slip coming into T1 and crashed into a barrier (see "slick course" statement above!). Out on the bike, the leader crashed going into the first high speed turn and that seemed to slow all of the lead group. On the out and back rolling course it was hard to get into a good rhythm but I was able to work my way up into a loose group of 4 riders. A young man from Tulsa was off the front and riding well. A quick transition got me on the second run with 3 others who had all out run me on the first run. I settled into a good pace but about 1/2 mile into the run I knew I had to do something as I was running 4th along side one with the other 2 about 20 yards up the road. I put in a surge but the guy stayed with me so I put in a second surge and broke him. I bridged up to the other two and kept on going hard. Todd Hink held on for a while but I could tell he was working hard so I kept the pressure on. I guess that I was running sub 5:30 pace during this time. Todd fell off just before the turn around and then I just did what was needed to stay comfortably ahead of him and the others (as you can tell by the picture of me looking over my shoulder!). I finished 2nd overall a little over a minute out of first place.

It was a good, competitive race which I like. And it was a very nice venue, one I would like to come back to. Especially if it's a nice sunny and dry day!

Silverlake Sprint Tri

The Silverlake Sprint Triathlon is held in west Pearland on the south side of Houston and has become a popular early season sprint race. The bike is fairly technical with lot's of turns and if you are not paying attention, you can easily bike off course as a few did this year.

Leading the charge for Finish Strong coached athletes was Tim Monk who finished 2nd overall and easily won his AG. Marshall McInnis was having a solid race before he, and others around him, rode off course (no volunteers at the corner). He still placed a respectable 13th in his AG. David Holsey won the 60-64 AG using a strong bike and run.

The Barron family once again did a great job! Lane (10 years of age) clocked a 1:07:06 placing 4th in the 10-14 AG while sisters Hannah and Katherine placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the girls 10-14 AG. And Carolyn (mom) continues to improve with each race, finishing 9th in the ever competitive 40-44 AG.

Tri Girl Super Sprint Triathlon

Finish Strong coached athletes Carloyn, Katherine and Hannah Barron participated in the Tri Girls Super Sprint triathlon on May 10 in Houston.

Hannah had a super strong swim beating both her mom and older sister out of the water. Carolyn's average speed of 19.4 mph on the bike was a personal best. Katherine raced well on her new tri bike averaging 19.2 mph and also had some fast transitions!

The Barron girls took home a lot of hardware! In the 10 - 14 age group Hannah placed 3rd beating out her older sister by a mere 8/10th's of a second. Carolyn placed 5th out of 53 in her age group to make it to the podium. Additionally, Carolyn and Hannah placed 1st in the Mother Daughter race category. What a great way to start out Mother's Day!

Corpus Christi Triathlon and Duathlon

This year the Corpus Christi Duathlon served as the USAT South Mid West Region Championship race. The turn out was a bit light but that's what you get when the Regional Championship race is scheduled on the same day as the USAT National Duathlon Championship (held in Richmond, VA this year). I'm not sure why the SMW Regional board can not find a race that does not conflict with Nationals!

But take nothing away from STARR, the Corpus Christi Tri club that puts on this race (26 years running!). The course was flat and fast with the exception of when you had to run or bike into the 30 mph headwinds! I ran the first 5k in 17:26 and then headed out on the out and back bike course. Into the wind on the way out it was all I could do to maintain 20 mph but once I made the turn, I headed back into town averaging 31 mph! Fun while it lasted. I was able to bike myself into the lead by the turn around and then extend that lead to a comfortable margin before heading out onto the run. I was pleased that my second run (17:47) was only 21 seconds slower than the first.

Needless to say I was mildly surprised to take the overall win and take home a nice check!

In the triathlon, Kyle Mays braved the 4 to 5 foot seas very successfully exiting the water in 19 minutes (1000m). A solid bike and run earned him a second place finish in his age group. If you ask Kyle, he'll tell you it was the most challenging open water swim he has ever completed.

STARRs put on a nice post event awards party in Cole Park. All in all it was a nice weekend get away for me and my family. If you are looking for a challenging race and a nice place to take the family to, try the Corpus Christi tri or du sometime.

Boston Marathon Race Report from Kristin

My 10th marathon, the Houston Marathon in January 2009, was my Boston Qualifying marathon. That was the defining point in which I called myself a runner. Running Boston has been a goal of mine for several years and the training and discipline finally paid off. It was still hard to believe that in April, I would toe the line with the some of the nation's and world's best runners to run the oldest marathon in America.

Many people gave me tips and pointers on how to run the race, what the course was going to be like, where I was going to hurt, how painful Heartbreak Hill was, how the downhills get you early on etc...so on race day, I took all of that into consideration. Running Boston wasn't about a PR for me, rather, it was a celebration of all of the hard work and sweat culminating from several years. With that said, I still wanted to respect the course and do the best I could, while enjoying every step of the 26.2 miles! Afterall, this was the 113th year of the marathon and I would be running on the same roads as the elite and other famous runners, many of which made history during their race. I ran with a camera to capture the course from a runner's standpoint and managed to take 60 pictures- mostly in focus! The crowd support for the marathon was absolutely incredible. From the beginning of the race in Hopkinton all the way to the Finish Line at Copley Square, people lined the course cheering on the runners.

It was like a 26 mile tailgate party with people barbecuing, kids playing, stereos cranking out music, and continuous updates on the score of the Red Sox game ( they won 12-1 by the way!) With all of the crowd support, it was easy to feel like a Rock Star and the road was your stage. They didn't know who I was, but they sure encouraged me anyway. Around mile 12, there was a sign that said "Brace your Ears" and you soon found out why. About a half mile away, you could hear this faint high pitched noise. Yep, the Wellesley Girls and the screaming tunnel. Wow. Shortly after Wellesley was Newton and the infamous Heartbreak Hill. I remember hearing someone at the bottom of the hill yelling out "strong and steady! strong and steady!" so I chanted that to myself the whole way up. Before I realized it, Heartbreak Hill had come and gone and I was on the downhill side of it, still able to run. ( must have been all of that hill training on Flintridge!) Nothing in my way now!

Boston College came shortly after that and the yelling and cheers from the students lining both sides of the street were like an extra shot of caffeine. From that point on, the streets were lined with wall to wall people. It was easy to draw strength from their encouraging words, smiles, high fives and signs. The Citgo sign appeared at mile 25. While I was excited to be near the finish line, I was also sad knowing that my race was almost over. Shortly after that, I heard my name from the side and it was Michael- he made it from the T just two minutes before I ran past him. I was still feeling great. Up ahead were the final two turns: Right on Hereford and then left on Boylston. After turning left on Boylst on, I wanted to stop in my tracks and just stare at the masses of people lining the streets and the finish line ahead. The noise level of the crowds echoed between the buildings and was so energizing. Crossing the finish line in 3:57:47 was bittersweet. I reached my goal of going sub 4 in Boston, but my marathon was over. Not to worry, I WILL be back!

Lonestar Triathlon Festival

A vast majority of local triathletes, and many Finish Strong athletes, competed in one of three races held this past weekend in Galveston. The Lonestar Triathlon Festival offered a Sprint race on Saturday, and a Quarter and Half Ironman on Sunday. The three races drew over 2400 participants (974 in the Sprint, 795 in the Quarter and 638 in the Half)!

In the Sprint tri, Rodrigo Abascal placed 5th in the under 18 age group (and 34th overall) with a time of 1:11:23. Richard Mac Namee, associate Finish Strong Coach, placed 3rd overall with a blistering time of 1:01:47.

Tim Monk has taken some time from his training for Kona to race a few shorter races early in the season including the Quarter distance in Galveston. He still showed some good speed by placing 2nd in his age group and 5th overall with a time of 2:13:20. Deb Crawford raced well in her first Quarter distance race with a time of 3:34:18.

In the Half Ironman race, Tommy Sustala led the way for Finish Strong coached athletes with a time of 4:52:31 which placed him 8th in his age group and 54th overall. Tommy’s time was a 35 minute PR! Jim Harrington (5:12:07 and pictured above), Kyle Mays (5:20:54), David Molthen (5:22:56) and Brian Waldrop (6:44:01 in his first HIM) also did well.

New Orleans 70.3

Wow! What a great venue for a half Ironman! Race Director Bill Burke knows how to put on race!

This was the first year for this race and while it had a couple of issues I'm sure they will be taken care of before next years race) the organization and race course were wonderful. Over 3,000 athletes, and 10,000 spectators enjoyed the race, including athletes from all 50 American states and 23 countries came to race and enjoy the great food and historical sites. Having the finish line near Jackson Square in the historical French Quarter helped provide the unique atmosphere of the race.

Conditions were near perfect for the race – the day began slightly overcast and the swim was very smooth, followed by moderate winds and temperatures in the low 70s for the bike and run. The swim was point-to-point in Lake Pontchartrain which went very smoothly. The bike course was completely closed to vehicle traffic! While the race was huge and I started in the 15th wave, I never had to contend with packs of cyclists. In fact, I did not see a single pace line! The run course was a simple point to point course that started from the transition area at the University of New Orleans Research Campus and ran along Lakeshore Drive then headed down into City Park before heading south along Esplanade Avenue to Decatur Street and the finish line located at World Famous Jackson Square.

Finish Strong athletes racing included Mike Bard, 5:21:50 (PR and improved his run by 1:03/mile), Todd Gibson, 6:07:18 and Marshall McInnis, 6:14:22.

I had a fairly good race clocking a 4:42:16 which was good enough to win the age group and earn a slot to the 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida in November.

I would encourage all to sign up for 2010 race now while you can!

Ironman Arizona

Several Finish Strong Athletes completed in Ironman, AZ in 2008. Both, Marcos Omelanczuk and Tommy Sustala each had great races in Arizona.  The fall edition of this race provided cooler temperatures and minimal winds in comparison with the April race.  Good call by the RD's to change the date.

Marcos completed IMAZ in 11:15:26.  Marcos had a good swim and strong bike (5:25).  Tommy used a very fast swim (56:16) and solid bike and run splits to finish his first Ironman in 11:22:05.  Both athletes were very disciplined following their training schedules and it paid off!

Ironstar Triathlon

Finish Strong Athletes dominate at the local Ironstar Triathlon. Race morning temperatures greet the nearly 400 competitors but the sun was out the the temperatures quickly climbed into the 70's by the time most were on the run course.

Finish Strong coached athletes had some great performances. Michelle LeBlanc was the 1st women and 3rd finisher overall in a stellar time of 4:32:43. Michelle capped off her race with a 1:29:50 run over a hilly course. Lisa Tilton won her age group in a time of 5:37:35 and was the 9th women to cross the line despite stopping to help a fellow triathlete who had a flat out on the course.

On the men's side, Walt Yarrow set a PR finishing in 5:08:15 which was good for a 5th place AG finish and 21st male across the line. Walt has been working on his run and it showed! He had a 1:43:15 which was 3rd fastest in his AG. Casey Clark and Phillip DePrang were competing in their first half ironman race. Casey finished with a 5:24:09 while Phillip with a 6:35:57.
